Dr. Callan received his BS, BA degree from the University of Arkansas in Business Management and Marketing. He received his DDS degree and a Certificate in Periodontics from the University of Missouri at Kansas City. During the 39 years he was in private practice, Dr. Callan volunteered at Arkansas Children's Hospital.

Since leaving private practice he takes appointments at Arkansas Children’s Hospital (cleft palate and craniofacial team) and is an Associate Professor with the College of Medicine at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences.

Past academic appointments were at the University of Oklahoma, Louisiana State University School of Dentistry, the University of Florida and University of Tennessee. He has also served as a clinical investigator for many dental implant companies. He was Chairman of Dental Tissue Services in Washington, D.C. for the American Red Cross.

He is an active member of OKU, American Academy of Periodontology, ADA, American Dental Society of Anesthesiology, American Academy of Implant Dentistry, and the American College of Oral Implantology. Dr. Callan has also served as President of the Arkansas Society of Periodontics. Dr. Callan is a Diplomat of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists (ICOI), a Fellow of the Pierre Fauchard Academy, a Fellow of The International College of Dentists, and a Fellow of the American Society of Osseointegration. He was the co-recipient of the Ralph V. McKinney, Jr., Annual Award for authoring a research article in the Journal of Implant Dentistry. He was also on the editorial board of the Journal of Triage and the Board of Trustees of the Implant Dentistry Research and Education Foundation and the ICOI International Credentials Committee.

Dr. Callan has authored 63 publications about dental implants, implantitis, tissue grafting and tissue regeneration. Throughout his career, Dr. Callan has presented lectures in the United States and internationally, including the University of Moscow, Russia, China, Japan, UK, Mexico, Canada, Central America, and South America, on various topics including dental implants, Peri- Implantitis, bone regeneration, soft tissue regeneration, implant maintenance, oral and systemic periodontal health, marketing to the dental patient and treatment planning of the edentulous patient.
