Rheumatology refers to inflammatory diseases that affect muscles, joints and connective tissues. These conditions often start with bone and joint pain. Often, a problem with the body's immune system causes it to attack its own cells. That is why many rheumatic conditions are called autoimmune. The pediatric rheumatology specialists at Arkansas Children's are specially trained to care for children with conditions more often associated with adults.

Our team provides the most advanced care and many of our doctors, nurses and staff are actively involved in research to improve care outcomes and find new treatments for these often difficult-to-manage conditions.

  • Reducing and controlling symptoms using medicines such as steroids, anti-inflammatories or immunosuppressives
  • Orthopedic surgery
  • Physical therapy

The pediatric rheumatology team at Arkansas Children's is actively involved in research to find the best treatments for pediatric arthritis and other autoimmune inflammatory conditions. Our doctors, nurses, physical therapists and other staff take part in local, national and global investigations of new and existing treatments. This means your child has access to the most advanced care available, including the opportunity to participate in clinical trials when appropriate.

Industry-Sponsored Studies

Investigator-Initiated Studies


These research studies were started by faculty members and doctors at Arkansas Children’s.

  • Retrospective study on juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM) patients and risk of infections with biological medications. Approved in Sept 2016.
  • Examination of the immunological profile of Sjogren's Syndrome patients. This is a collaborative study with the University of Florida at Gainesville. Approved in August 216. Recruiting patients.
