"I felt compelled because I knew that was one of my strengths," he said. "I felt like I could really help somebody out in that situation and be there for those patients and their families in the most difficult time. Whenever they feel like they didn't have anybody to turn to, I wanted to be that person."

As a  Pediatric Intensive Care Unit nurse, Long is charged with caring for some of the most challenging cases in the state, a responsibility that he doesn't take lightly. The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit is a 26-bed unit located on the third floor of the main hospital and provides care for the sickest and most critically injured children in the state.
