Peter Mourani, MD, serves as President of the Arkansas Children's Research Institute and as the Senior Vice President and Chief Research Officer for Arkansas Children's, the state's only pediatric health system. Dr. Mourani holds the Whipple Family Distinguished Research Scientist Endowed Chair at Arkansas Children's and an academic appointment at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences as Professor of Pediatrics in the Section of Critical Care.
Dr. Mourani joined Arkansas Children's in 2020 from the University of Colorado and Children's Colorado Hospital. He served as a Professor of Pediatrics in the Section of Critical Care Medicine and was Medical Director of the Children's Hospital Colorado Research Institute. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Notre Dame and earned his medical degree at Loyola University, Stritch School of Medicine. Dr. Mourani completed his pediatric residency at Loyola University Medical Center, followed by a Pediatric Critical Care Fellowship and a Pediatric Pulmonary Fellowship at The Children's Hospital, University of Colorado School of Medicine.
He is board-certified in pediatric pulmonary and critical care medicine.
The overall focus of Dr. Mourani's research has been the identification of mechanisms and biomarkers of acute lung disease in critically ill neonates, infants, and children. Specifically, he has two research foci: 1) developmental lung and lung vascular disease in infants who are born extremely premature and 2) lower respiratory tract infections, including ventilator-associated-pneumonia in critically ill children requiring mechanical ventilator support. While seemingly disparate topics, these two foci have capitalized on the breadth of Dr. Mourani's training as both a pulmonologist and critical care physician and on collaborations with multi-disciplinary scientific teams to obtain a consistent level of funded projects (including NIH Research Grants and Cooperative Agreements) and to produce impactful results.
In addition to serving as the Principal Investigator for funded projects in these focused areas, Dr. Mourani serves as the Site Principal Investigator and Steering Committee Member for the prestigious National Institute of Child Health and Human Development-supported Collaborative Pediatric Critical Care Research Network (CPCCRN), which performs meaningful clinical research in the field of pediatric critical illness and injury. He is a key member of the team that designed the Personalized Immunomodulation in Pediatric Sepsis-induced MODS (PRECISE) for the upcoming cycle of CPCCRN, which will be among the first personalized medicine trials in pediatric critical care.
