Description: Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) courses have been developed by the American Heart Association. They emphasize the recognition and treatment of adult (over 10 years of age) cardiac dysrhythmias.

The course is intended for physicians, paramedics, nurses and respiratory therapists.

Course Objectives: The ACLS course is designed to teach participants to manage the first 10 minutes of a witnessed, adult, ventricular fibrillation cardiac arrest. The participant must manage the patient alone for several minutes, performing basic CPR and automated defibrillation. The participant will also learn to direct members of a team to assist in resuscitation.

• Interlibrary Loan Service: ACH and UAMS Peds staff can order articles and books through UAMS library inter-library loan system, ILLiad, after registration.
• PubMed: PubMed Medline indexes clinical literature from 1947 to present, with some full text journals.
• NORD Rare Diseases Database: Pamphlets on genetic and rare diseases with links to national organizations and support groups. Access available on all ACH networked computers.
• Google Scholar: Search for scholarly literature across many disciplines and sources on the web.
• Rare Diseases Info Center: the Genetic and Rare Diseases Information Center (GARD) helps people find information about genetic conditions and rare diseases. Contact GARD at 1-888-205-2311.

Description: Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) courses have been developed by the American Heart Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics. They emphasize early recognition of respiratory failure and/or shock and the prevention of cardiopulmonary arrest.

The course is intended for pediatricians, house staff, emergency physicians, family physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, paramedics and any others who may treat pediatric patients.

Course Objectives: The PALS course is designed to provide the participant with: Information needed for recognizing the infant or child at risk for cardiopulmonary arrest. Information and strategies needed to prevent cardiopulmonary arrest in the pediatric patient. Cognitive and psychomotor skills necessary for resuscitation and stabilization of the pediatric patient in respiratory failure, shock or cardiopulmonary arrest.

Background:

Postgraduate Year Two (PGY2) Program Purpose: PGY2 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency programs to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in specialized areas of practice. PGY2 residencies provide residents with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and incorporating both into the provision of patient care or other advanced practice settings. Residents who successfully complete an accredited PGY2 pharmacy residency are prepared for advanced patient care, academic, or other specialized positions, along with board certification, if available.

The PGY2 Pharmacy Residency Program at Arkansas Children's Hospital provides a structured educational program within a pediatric institution; this program is meant to develop independent and confident clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care in a wide range of pediatric conditions. Residents who complete the PGY2 residency are prepared for advanced pediatric patient care, specialized positions, and national certification.

• Optional Research Certificate Program with UAMS College of Pharmacy
• Complete a medication use evaluation (MUE) or quality improvement audit
• Prepare at least one monograph, treatment guideline or protocol completion

Application Process:

Applicants must possess a degree in pharmacy from an American Council on Pharmaceutical Education (ACPE) accredited college and have successfully completed a PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program. The applicant must also be eligible for licensure in the state of Arkansas.

PGY2 applicants invited for an on-site interview are asked to give a 30-40 minute presentation.
