Adolescent Medicine Clinic
Adolescent Medicine focuses on the unique physical, emotional and social needs of youth between the ages of 12 and 21. Adolescence is a critical time of growth, development and discovery. While experimentation and risk-taking behaviors are hallmarks of this stage, these unchecked behaviors can evolve into physical and mental health problems. These issues-left untreated-often lead to poor health and chronic issues in adulthood.
The Arkansas Children's Adolescent Medicine multidisciplinary team provides holistic consultative services and support for teens' health and well-being. Providers create a safe and inclusive environment for all adolescents and their families to ask questions and discuss confidential concerns. They provide a comprehensive biopsychosocial evaluation and extensive counseling on teen health topics. The team specializes in challenges teens face, such as changes during puberty, mental health and behavior struggles, and balanced diet and exercise patterns. We provide support for pregnant and parenting teens, youth engaging in high-risk behaviors, youth who are bullied or are struggling with peers, and youth who are managing a chronic illness.
Other services the team provides are:
- Behavioral and medication management for anxiety and depression
- Comprehensive care for eating disorders
- Consultation on genital concerns, such as discharge or appearance
- Counseling on adolescent nutrition needs, growth and development
- Counseling on hygiene and body changes in puberty, including for youth with disabilities
- Counseling for teens struggling with problematic internet, video game or cell phone use
- Evaluation and treatment of missed, painful, heavy and irregular periods
- Evaluation and treatment of sexual health concerns, including contraception and sexually transmitted infections
- Evaluation of behavioral issues, including anger and school problems
- Pre-exposure prophylaxis for HIV (PrEP) for adolescents and young adults
- Pre-menstrual syndrome (PMS) and pre-menstrual dysphoric disorder management
- Treatment of acne
- Treatment of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS)
Referral Process
