What is epididymitis?

Inflammation of the epididymis is known as epididymitis. Epididymitis occurs more frequently among late adolescents but can also occur in younger boys.

What are the signs and symptoms of epididymitis?

Signs and symptoms of epididymitis may include:

• sudden onset of pain to scrotum
• redness and swelling to scrotum
• painful urination
• fever

What causes epididymitis?

Several factors may predispose boys to develop epididymitis including:

• sexual activity
• heavy physical exertion
• direct trauma/injury to urinary tract
• structural abnormalities of the urinary tract

When do I need to call the doctor?

When epididymitis is suspected, your child should be seen by an experienced healthcare provider. He may need to provide a urine sample for evaluation.

How is epididymitis treated?

Your child's treatment for epididymitis will depend on the cause of the problem. This may include:

• antibiotics for suspected infection
• pain medicine
• scrotal support and elevation
• bed rest
