Dysuria  (Painful Urination)

What is dysuria?

Dysuria is painful urination. Sometime, it is described as burning with urination.

What are the signs and symptoms of dysuria?

Signs and symptoms of dysuria, or painful urination, may include:

• Burning or stinging when urinating (peeing)
• Crying while urinating (peeing)
• Intentional holding of urine by child

What causes dysuria?

There are many possible causes for dysuria. Some common causes can include:

• Urinary tract infection (UTI)
• Swelling or inflammation of the vagina or urethra
• Kidney or urinary stones
• Diaper rashes or skin rashes
• Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)
• Constipation
• Irritants to the skin, such as certain soaps or bubble baths

When do I need to call the doctor?

Call your doctor, or seek medical care, if your child has new or worsening pain with urination. If this is associated with fever, more frequent urination, stomach pain, back pain, or blood in the urine, your child's urine will need to be tested.

How is dysuria treated?

Your child's treatment for dysuria will depend on the cause of the problem. The Division of Urology at Arkansas Children's is experienced in diagnosing and treating dysuria and will work with you to determine a diagnosis and treatment plan for your child.
