We treat nearly all children who receive care at Arkansas Children's, whether they have a common illness or a rare condition. Our pathologists are experts at performing tests to diagnose everything from acute appendicitis to rare forms of pediatric cancer.
Our pathology team also works with your child’s doctors to determine the best treatments and to ensure that your child responds well to the care and treatments provided.

Acute appendicitis is the inflammation of the appendix. The appendix can be blocked and can fill with bacteria.

Adrenocortical carcinoma is a rare childhood cancer that is most often diagnosed in children between the ages of 1 and 4.

Surgical Resection
In some cases, surgery is needed to remove a tumor or to remove sections of bone, muscle or soft tissue that is affected by cancer or benign growth.

Limb Preservation
Our surgeons do everything possible to restore the affected bone or limb. After the affected bone and tissue is removed, the remaining gap in the bone is replaced with a bone graft or an artificial metal part.

Radiation uses special kinds of energy waves or seeds to fight cancer cells and prevent them from growing and spreading. The type of radiation therapy used depends on the kind of cancer being treated.

A blood transfusion is when donated blood from our blood bank is transferred to your child.

Bone Marrow Aspirate
Studies of liquid bone marrow and pieces of bone containing marrow are taken and then examined to check for abnormal blood cells.

Eosinophilic Esophagitis
The Pathology team performs a biopsy of the esophagus to study the cells of the esophageal wall.

Heart Transplant Evaluation for Rejection
Tests are performed to study how well your child's immune system will accept a donor heart.

Pathology provides studies of the cells lining the intestines and the colon to find out what is causing inflammation.

Peripheral Smear Review
A peripheral smear review is a blood test used to look for abnormalities in the number and shape of blood cells.
Clinical Trials & Research
The pathology team works on clinical trials in collaboration with doctors and nurses at Arkansas Children’s. Our pathologists frequently send tissue samples to the Children’s Oncology Group for research studies.As a member of the Children’s Oncology Group, Arkansas Children’s and its patients have access to nearly 100 active clinical trials open at any given time.
The Children's Oncology Group is a National Cancer Institute supported clinical trials group and the world's largest group devoted to childhood and adolescent cancer research. The group unites 9,000 pediatric cancer experts at more than 200 leading children's hospitals, universities, and cancer centers in North America, Australia, New Zealand, and Europe.

Training Programs
Arkansas Children’s provides different training rotations to residents in the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences College of Medicine (UAMS) Pathology program. Residents from the Department of Pathology and Department of Pediatrics complete multiple rotations in pediatric pathology at Arkansas Children’s. In addition, one student each year from the Medical Laboratory Sciences Program at UAMS also takes part in pathology training.
